Art Itself Is Nature
A Mourne Coastal Journey
Newcastle Library
3-12 April 2024
The Exhibition
This exhibition is comprised of 20 images taken from my "Art Itself is Nature" collection. The images were created at a number of locations along the Mourne coastline starting at Slatemill Bay and heading North visiting the shorelines of Kilkeel, Ballymartin, Bloody Bridge and eventually finishing at Newcastle and Dundrum Bay. Along the way I headed inland to shoot at Silent Valley and later, followed the Bloody Bridge River up into the mountains. Despite this such a small length of coastline, there are so many places that I have yet to visit, and keeping in mind that landscape compositions change continuously with the weather and environment, there is always an abundance of fascinating material to work with.
From an artistic point of view, much of my work leans more towards an abstract interpretation of the landscape, where I visualise particular shapes and elements that would not always be apparent at a casual glance. At times, especially when the camera does not pick up all of the detail, particularly in the case of over-exposed water, I am afforded the luxury of embellishing the image wih acrylic ink and paint, but only when it adds something to the composition.
